Nolan North: The Voice of Video Games

He voiced a Greek God in God of War, made the ladies swoon in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and grunted his way through Fable II. Nolan North is one of the most prolific voice actors in video games. His portfolio includes games such as Metal Gear Solid, Saints Row, Dragon Age: Origins, Call of Duty 2 and Gears of War. How did this soap opera star make the move into video games? What are some of the strangest voices he’s ever had to do? What was his favorite role? Many gamers are wondering what it takes to break into video game voice acting and what the lifestyle includes. We’ll examine Nolan North’s various contributions to gaming and how they have affected his career.

Famous Roles for Nolan North

There are several roles of Nolan North with which you are probably familiar. In fact, North typically provides voice acting for more than 12 games each year. Provided here are just a few:

* However tied up gamers were in Altair, Nolan North provided the voice for the descendant of this assassin – Desmond Miles in both Assassin’s Creed 1 and 2. He is expected to return for the third and likely final installment in the series.

* Although this was one of the least lines intensive jobs for North, he provided the grunts, farts and cheers from the protagonist in Fable 2.

* Raphael in both the TMNT film and video game was voiced by North. Of further interest is the fact that North also voiced Deadpool and Cyclops in the animated series by Marvel.

* Most people that think of Nolan North will remember his defining role as Nathan Drake in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. North also claims this role as his favorite among the video game voice roles he has done.

* One of North’s most forgotten roles is as an additional voice contributor to Goldeneye 007 on the Nintendo 64.

North’s Experience with Video Games

After moving to California, North claims that he got lucky by landing his first acting role on a spin off of General Hospital called Port Charles and a video game voice role in Maximo Vs. the Army of Zin. His thoughts on how he broke into the video game voice acting industry were simply hard work and luck. According to North, he “painted houses during the day and tended bar at night until I got lucky.” He also claims that he has had some rather odd roles in the past. For example, North was asked to pretend like he was drowning and had to gargle water in the voice studio – almost throwing up in the process. Another time, he was asked to act like he was a zombie being cut from his neck down to his hips with a chainsaw.

Remarking on fears and criticisms that he will become typecast because of playing many similar roles, North claimed that he couldn’t help how he was asked to voice characters. Options are still there for Nolan North and multiple venues and he is unlikely to be used up any time soon.

$34.95

In Philosophy Through Video Games, Jon Cogburn and Mark Silcox – philosophers with game industry experience – investigate the aesthetic appeal of video games, their effect on our morals, the insights they give us into our understanding of perceptual knowledge, personal identity, artificial intelligence, and the very meaning of life itself, arguing that video games are popular precisely because they engage with longstanding philosophical problems.

The Meaning of Video Games

The Meaning of Video Games

$34.95

The Meaning of Video Games takes a textual studies approach to an increasingly important form of expression in today’s culture. It begins by assuming that video games are meaningful–not just as sociological or economic or cultural evidence, but in their own right, as cultural expressions worthy of scholarly attention. In this way, this book makes a contribution to the study of video games, but it also aims to enrich textual studies. Early video game studies scholars were quick to point out that a game should never be reduced to merely its "story" or narrative content and they rightly insist on the importance of studying games as games. But here Steven E. Jones demonstrates that textual studies–which grows historically out of ancient questions of textual recension, multiple versions, production, reproduction, and reception–can fruitfully be applied to the study of video games. Citing specific examples such as Myst and Lost , Katamari Damacy , Halo , Façade , Nintendo’s Wii , and Will Wright’s Spore , the book explores the ways in which textual studies concepts–authorial intention, textual variability and performance, the paratext, publishing history and the social text–can shed light on video games as more than formal systems. It treats video games as cultural forms of expression that are received as they are played, out in the world, where their meanings get made.

Sex in Video Games

Sex in Video Games

$33.49

Since the first computer games became available, sex has played a role in some form. But with the release of games like Playboy: The Mansion, Leisure Suit Larry, and The Singles, sexual content has gained a firm foothold and for the first time, ventured into the mainstream. Even casual games like The Sims have started to rev things up a bit, and in on-line games, tales of cybering have become commonplace. This sexual revolution in games has generated intense scrutiny of the games industry by political watchdog groups and family-oriented organizations. And it has brought the importance of self-regulation and rating systems to the forefront of the industry. Seeking to understand this emerging trend, developers, publishers, retailers, and consumers are asking themselves: When is sex appropriate in a game? How far is too far? What will it mean for the product? For its distribution? For my company? For me? Do games with sexual content sell better? Are they generally profitable? So far, there are no definitive answers to these questions. Sex in Video Games provides insight into this issue and presents guidelines and answers by studying the history of sexual content use in games and within the industry itself. In addition, the book considers ethical issues, parental and retailer responsibility, and explores industry attempts at self-regulation, along with a growing concern about potential censorship.
