China Gate: Global cadets under French instruct assault a Socialist munitions area in Indochina. Fascinating subplots flesh out Fuller’s dynamic action tale, with early view of Vietnam’s internal strife. Cast includes Gene Barry, Angie Dickinson, Nat Emperor Cole, Paul Dubov, Lee Van Cleef, George Givot, and Marcel Dalio. (97 minutes, 1957)
Last summer: Commanding tale based on Evan Hunter novel of adolescents playing on the shore in a summer resort. The film follows their games, sensual awakenings, and how evil materializes itself with incredible determination. Cathy Bums was a standout. Cast includes Richard Thomas, Barbara Hershey, Bruce Davison, Cathy Burns, Ralph Waite, and Conrad Bain. (97 minutes, 1969)
Hold That Ghost: Prime Abott and Costello, with the boys inheriting a haunted home. Fine cast contains humorous Davis as virtuoso stereo screamer. A highlight is the moving candle. Cast includes Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Richard Carlson, Joan Davis, Mischa Auer, Evelyn Ankers, Marc Lawrence, Shemp Howard, Ted Lewis, and The Andrews Sisters. (86 minutes, 1941)
The General: Boorman inscribed this personality research of a ture story about a Dublin felon known as the General, who avoided being captured for years. Following his own skewed set of morals, he masterminds robberies both big and small, refuses to trust anyone, cherishes 2 ladies simultaneously, and matches brains with a tough nosed cop (Voight) who is decided to catch him. Cast includes Brendan Gleeson, Jon Voight, Adrian Dunbar, Sean McGinley, Maria Doyle Kenoedy, Angeline Ball, and Eamonn Owens. (124 minutes, 1998)
Great Guns: Later Laural and Hardy Army comedy is weak, not as poor as some although far underneath their classic films. Cast includes Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Sheila Ryan, Dick Nelson, and Edmund MacDonald. (74 minutes, 1941)
Nutcracker the Motion Picture: Much of this rendition of The Nutcracker, acted by the Pacific Notthwest Ballet, is like a music video with rapid cutting and close-ups of legs, faces, and elbows. This is extremely irritating. However the Tchaikovsky music is, obviously, amazing, as are Maurice Sendak’s sets and costumes. Cast includes Hugh Bigney, Vanessa Acute” Patricia Barker, Plod Walthall, Russell Burnett, and the voice of Julie Harris. (89 minutes, 1986)
Ali Fear Eats the Soul: Widow Mira, in her 60s, falls in love with and weds an Arab 30 years her junior. The work is a fascinating, calmly powerful Fassbinder film that is a redo of Douglas Sirk’s All That Heaven Allows. Cast includes Brigitte Mira, EI Hedi Ben Salem, Barbara Valentin, Irm Hermann, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. (94 minutes, 1974)
The Indian Fighter: Stimulating account of Douglas leading wagon train through rampaging Indian nation. A powerful werstern with a storng cast. Cast includes Kirk Douglas, Walter Matthau, Elsa Martinelli, Walter Abel, and Lon Chaney. (88 minutes, 1955)
