Word puzzle games have been around a long time. Many years ago, word puzzle games were only available in printed formats. The New York Times Crossword Puzzle may be one of the most well known of this type of word puzzle game. Kids played Hangman using a chalkboard or paper to try to guess the word before they got hung.
There were also several series of booklets, published monthly with a whole slew of games for the word puzzle game lovers. Newsstands carried them and they were very popular with patients in hospitals as a stimulating way to pass time. The game of Scrabble is another variation on the printed games. Word puzzles are excellent teachers of the language on a number of levels, improving vocabulary, spelling, critical thinking processes and understanding of logical concepts. So they’re winners!
The internet has become a new venue for word puzzle games and is able to reach many people across the world. They can now challenge other people and reach new heights when competing for attaining the highest score. There are many free puzzle games out there in the internet.
Some games disguise themselves as an action game with a lot of graphics and animation but are really word puzzles. Kids especially love this type as they sometimes don’t even know it is a learning game they are playing. They are learning as they play.
The SandScript game is a great example of this. This is a game that teaches kids in different word puzzle games but yet give it a video game action feel to it.
Other word puzzle games focus on a younger age group, with simpler words and cartoon style or photographs of the word or clue.
Word puzzle games continue to amaze and will ever keep evolving. The internet is the new plateau and has been able to reach a broader audience which keeps them coming back for more!
